Environmentally Aware - Green Travel Tips

  1. Stay local and skip the travel altogether (have you felt the wonder of experiencing something new right under your nose? . . . so many delights are within a walk, bike ride or short drive away)

2. Keep your car tuned up (regular maintenance improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions)

3. Keep tires inflated to the standard set in your owner’s manual (not the psi marked on the tire)

4. Take the most efficient route when driving (Google Maps shows this with a green leaf icon)

5. Find a way to take 10 miles of driving out of your weekly routine by carpooling, combining errands or bicycling the shorter routes (doing so eliminates 500 pounds of carbon emissions per year)

6. Shut down your engine (idling for any lengths of time burns more gas than it takes to restart the car)

7. Slow down (fast acceleration, hard braking and speeding waste gas)

8. If you must wash your car, do it at the car wash (they’re required to send the soapy water through a filtering system)

9. Before purchasing a plane ticket, check the train schedule instead (for regional travel it’s more fuel efficient, the window views are beautiful and there’s no TSA lines to stand in)

10. If you must fly, fly direct where possible (take-off and landing take the most fuel)

11. When in hotels, skip the housekeeping (or at the very least, hang up your towel so they don’t replace it)

Awareness is the beginning. Then comes behavior.

Then others notice your behavior and are inspired.

Then we get to cherish and enjoy and preserve our beautiful Earth.
